I Quit My Book Club Yesterday

Prejudice is the child of ignorance.
-William Hazlitt

Re: August book club meeting

I put this off too long and I apologize in advance for waiting until today to spring this on all of you since I am scheduled to lead the discussion for The Art Forger at the next meeting. I have decided to resign from the book club because of the several anti Semitic remarks I've heard during past book club meetings. I feel if I stayed in the book club any longer I would be condoning the intolerance expressed by these remarks and, frankly, my mother taught me better. I will miss book club and I am sorry to leave but this is something that I cannot let slide.

Well said. To the point, but not mean. Love the bit about your mother… :-)

It's good that you don't let bigotry get by even when it's in what seems an 'innocent' group. From there it grows when it's taken for granted as 'normal' and acceptable. Sorry you lost the group but good you took a stand.

Well done. I've often had a rant at the time at such occurrences, but I'm sure it doesn't have anywhere near the effect that this did.

Did you get any reply?

Yes, at first. The woman who knew I was talking about her emailed me several times saying we should talk it out but I said I wasn't doing this to get my way or change anyone's mind but because I was uncomfortable being there and that my coming back would just make other people uncomfortable too so my coming back wasn't going to happen. I had one more person call me and I did not get back to them right away. I left a message but never heard back. I think in their minds I went from being the person pointing out the problem to being the person causing the problem. Human nature.

Yes indeed. It's amazing how people can change the facts to suit their own psychology.

More and more I find myself doing what you've done here and simply walking away from vexatious people. I find that people have much more fixed mindsets these days - no point wasting time trying to help them move beyond it!

Agree completely, BW, just not worth the effort.
