Cowboy King of Hollywood

The Texas Bad Man (1932)



October 12, 1940, silent film and early talkies cowboy star Tom Mix rolls his speeding 1937 Cord 812 Phaeton into a gully about 20 miles south of Florence, Arizona. He is killed when a heavy aluminum suitcase he had in the backseat hits him in the head shattering his skull and breaking his neck. Thousands of fans and Hollywood celebrities attended his funeral on October 16, 1940.

we've driven past the site often. He was mostly out of his career as he didn't like doing talkies and was in his 50s. Still a loss of what many consider the real deal-- although Gary Cooper came from Montana and was also good with horses-- or so they say ;)

I had forgotten Cary Cooper was a real cowboy when he was young.
